Restorative Justice Savings

Interesting interview from Dr Ian Marder, Maynooth University in relation to restorative justice and how it has still not recovered from a collapse in referrals during the covid 19 pandemic.

Papers published last August by the Department of Justice have stated that restorative justice has not yet been used to its maximum potential in Ireland and that its expansion could deliver significant savings to the State.

In 2023 there were only 404 referrals for restorative justice compared to 721 in 2019.

Restorative justice is a very useful tool that can be utilised for victims as well as defendants and should be available more.
