The Minister for Justice has recently published the general theme to the Defamation Act 2009 Amendment Bill.

The Bill was published on the back of a recent report on a review of the Defamation Act 2009.

The new Bill, if enacted and commenced, will bring various changes to the Defamation Act 2009.

In particular, it will amend the requirement for jury trials in High Court defamation matters.

This undoubtedly would speed up the process of defamation cases.

The Bill places greater emphasis on alternative dispute resolution and also provides stronger defences for Defendants should they make a prompt correction or issue an apology.

If the Act is commenced, it undoubtedly will bring a modernisation of the Defamation Act 2009 and will benefit all stakeholders including the general public and media.
